BINGHAMTON – The Lady Purple Tornado started the second half of their divisional second with a 62-39 road win over the Chenango Valley Warriors Tuesday night.
Norwich jumped out to a 23-4 lead after the first with six different players scoring at least on basket in the stanza. Halea Eaton led the quarter scoring with seven while Sydney Coggins dropped five. Both finished the game with double figures for Norwich as Eaton led all scorers with 14 and Coggins scored 12.
Purple Tornado head coach Josh Bennett stated after the game that his team played a sloppy second quarter, adding 11 points to their score but were out played by the Warriors in the stanza. Chenango Valley cut the Norwich margin down to 14 points as they tallied 16 in the second.
Out of the halftime break, the Tornado played like the team from the first, pulling their game back together to put up 19 on the scoreboard. This time, Norwich had seven players balance the scoring out in the eight minute stretch but it was Eaton leading the way with five points.
The aggressive style of defense that the Purple Tornado play once again limited the offensive production by the Warriors, allowing just eight points in the same quarter.
The tables turned in the fourth quarter as Chenango Valley picked up their defensive efforts and held Norwich to nine points. The Warriors scored 11 to close out the game but Norwich’s first and third quarter scoring routs led to the 23 point win.
Calista Smith led CV in the scoring column with 13 points.
The win is the Lady Tornado’s sixth in a row and 12th of the season. Norwich, who is currently ranked No. 8 in the New York State Class B rankings, hits the court again at 7:15 p.m. on Friday against an always tough road test, the Susquehanna Valley Sabers.

Deposit/Hancock 49, Greene 46
HANCOCK – Greene’s McKenna Sergi went off for 25 points against Midstate Athletic Conference foe Deposit/Hancock, draining seven 3-pointers in the contest but the Lady Trojans fell short on the road Tuesday night, losing 49-46 to the Eagles.
Greene’s setback came at the foul line and within two feet of the rim as they went 2-for-10 at the stripe and “missed too many layups,” according to head coach Dave Gorton. “We had many chances to win but we could not finish consistently.”
Sergi hit four of her seven from behind the arc in the first quarter, aiding in the one point lead held by the Trojans.
The Eagles stand-out Laycee Drake hit two deep balls of her own in the second, helping her team take a two point advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The two teams battled in the third but Greene was able to out score Deposit/Hancock in the third, cutting the deficit to one point with the final eight minutes remaining.
In the fourth, Drake knocked down five from the free throw line – four coming in the late game stretch – to help her team hold on for the win.
Helping the Trojans’ keep the score close in the fourth was Emma Smith’s five points but the missed opportunities saw Greene come out on the losing end.
Smith ended the night with 12 for the Trojans.
